50 years of the ACU British Trials Championship 1974-2024

ACU British Trials events are over 100 years old and very much a central part of the off-road motorcycle world. The official national Championship itself is regarded as dating to the 1950s. Records from the past and the recording of the championships are sparce and this is the first complete history of the last 50 years of the Championship.

The benchmark was set by Sammy Miller from 1959-69 as the Spanish Armada of Bultaco, Montesa and Ossa replaced the once mighty motorcycle manufacturing in the UK. Gordon Farley broke Millers stranglehold in 1970 and 1971 before the famous battles would start between Malcolm Rathmell who won in 1972 and Martin Lampkin in 1973. Arguably this marks the start of a new era.

From 1974 there have been 15 winners of the ACU British Trials Championship. This special publication celebrates the Championship over the last five decades with the first comprehensive recording of the individual round winners and their points scores supported with a wide selection of many unseen pictures right up to 2024.
